How do we know your beef is ready to butcher?
We take great care of our animals in a low stress environment. We move them slow and easy, are carful to remove any aggressive or hard to handle calves from our inventory. Calm cows, calm bulls make calm calves that grow and are tender!
We weigh our cattle often and pay attention to their daily gain. When their daily weight gain slows we know that the quality gain that yields great tasting tender meat is complete. This allows the beef to have a proper amount of fat that allows for proper aging during the 14 day aging process. Without this attention to detail the animal will put on unwanted poor quality weight or they would not have enough fat to age properly. These processes allow for a greater yield in finished meat that end up in your freezer.
We have had several comments from customers stating they received a larger quantity of meat when purchasing from Lazy 5S Cattle Company.
We do not process cattle before it is time just to fill an order.

Brewer’s grain is a by-product of the brewing process during beer production. Barley is soaked in water until it germinates and then dried to produce the malt (malting). The malted grains are milled and steeped in hot water so that enzymes transform the starch into sugars (mashing/saccharification). The resulting sugar-rich liquid (wort) is then boiled, filtered and fermented to produce beer (here is a useful article explaining the process). Brewers grains are collected at the end of the mashing process, once all sugars have been removed from the grain. At a 24% protein count, the remaining product is a protein and fiber rich wet grain that is excellent for feeding our steers.
We collect our brewer's grain from Mother Road Brewing Company as soon as each brew is completed. The grains are fed immediately to our steers to prevent spoilage. We refer to the brewer's grain that we collect as a supplemental feed, and here is why: the brewer's grain that we use complements the pastures that our steers graze. After years of doing this, we have perfected our feed program. The wet brewer's grain that we are collecting fulfills all of our micro and macro nutrients, except in the spring when our grasses and are deficient in calcium. We compensate for this by supplementing with diatomaceous earth, which has the added benefit of acting as a natural parasitic. * Brewers grain finished beef, Grass fed and finished beef, Grain fed beef.

Grass fed beef is what our family grew up on and until my mid 20's I didn't know what corn or grain fed beef was. Grass fed beef production is what Lazy 5S started doing on day one no hormones, no steroids, no corn, just green grass. In our first 10 years we sold fall beef butchered after the summer grass growing season. Our mother cows after calving would winter at our headquarters and be supplemented with quality alfalfa hay. As soon as spring green hit our cattle and calves spent the summer on green lush irrigated pastures. We still provide Grass fed beef raised this same way to select customers upon request. These are generally processed in November or December. Grass fed has many health benefits (Health Benefits of Grass Fed Beef ) that help several of our customers meet their beef requirements, taste and health concerns. Grass fed beef does have a distinctive flavor, we at Lazy 5S use only one supplement RioMax Prograss360 Tubs. Prograss360® is an ultra-concentrated lick tub designed for grass-fed operations. allowing animals to meet their nutritional requirements with very small amounts of product with no antibiotics, hormones, animal by-products, grain, grain by-products, or urea.
